Ifølge legenden kom aztekernes forfedre nordfra,fra det mytiske urhjemmet Aztlán, og vandret til Texcocosjøen i det sentrale Mexico. De lokale makthaverne tepanekerne gav dem tillatelse til å slå seg ned i sumpene sør for byen Tlatelolco. Her ble de veiledet av deres gud Huitzilopochtli til å finne det rette sted å slå seg ned. Da de så en ørn som spiste en slange, sittende på en nopal-kaktus ved en stor stein på en liten høyde, tok de det som et tegn på at det var her de skulle slå seg ned, og de bygde byen Tenochtitlan. Den er i dag Mexico bys sentrum. Den legendariske ørnen, med slangen i nebbet, er avbildet på det meksikanske flagg og riksvåpen.
