When Columbus wandered around the world, and came to the island he named San Salvador in 1492 in America, he called the islanders he met there Indians. The reason he called them Indians was that he thought he was going to India, while he was actually in America. The Indians lived in tribes, scattered around the country. There were Indian tribes in Alaska, Canada, USA, Mexico, Peru, and throughout the southern part of South America. Indians are indigenous, ie, a group of people who have preserved completely, or part of their traditional culture and values.
