Da Columbus vandret verden rundt, og kom til øya han kalte San Salvador i 1492 i Amerika, kalte han øyboerne han møtte der for indianere. Grunnen til at han kalte dem for indianer var at han trodde han kom til India, mens han egentlig var i Amerika. Indianerne levde i stammer, spredt rundt på landet. Det fantes indianer stammer i Alaska, Canada, Usa, Mexico, Peru, og hele den sørlige delen av Sør- Amerika. Indianere er urfolk, dvs. en folkegruppe som har bevart helt, eller deler av sin tradisjonelle kultur og verdier.

When Columbus wandered around the world, and came to the island he named San Salvador in 1492 in America, he called the Islanders he met there for the Indians. The reason he called them for Indian was that he thought he came to India, while he was actually in America. The native Americans lived in tribes, scattered around the country. There were Indian tribes in Alaska, Canada, Usa, Mexico, Peru, and the whole of the southern part of South America. Indians are the indigenous people, IE. a folk group that has preserved all the way, or parts of their traditional culture and values.
